What Is the Circulatory System?


The circulatory system is the body's transport network. It moves blood, oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products to and from cells. This system is essential because it keeps the body’s environment stable and healthy.


Main Functions of the Circulatory System


  • Transport of oxygen from the lungs to all body cells.

  • Transport of nutrients from the digestive system to cells.

  • Removal of waste products like carbon dioxide and urea.

  • Hormone transport to regulate body functions.

Components of the Circulatory System


The circulatory system has three main parts:


  1. Heart

  2. Blood

  3. Blood vessels


Each part plays a special role in keeping blood moving and the body healthy.



The Heart


The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. It is about the size of a fist and is located slightly to the left side of the chest.


Structure of the Heart


The heart has four chambers:


  • Right Atrium: Receives oxygen-poor blood from the body.

  • Right Ventricle: Pumps this blood to the lungs.

  • Left Atrium: Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs.

  • Left Ventricle: Pumps oxygen-rich blood to the entire body.


A thick wall called the septum separates the right and left sides of the heart to prevent mixing of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood.

Plasma

Red Blood Cells (RBC)

White Blood Cells (WBC)

  • Help blood clot to stop bleeding.

Blood Vessels


Blood vessels are tubes that carry blood throughout the body. There are three types:


Arteries


  • Carry blood away from the heart.

  • Usually carry oxygen-rich blood (except pulmonary artery).

  • Thick, muscular walls.

  • High blood pressure.


Veins


  • Carry blood towards the heart.

  • Usually carry oxygen-poor blood (except pulmonary vein).

  • Thin walls with valves to prevent backflow.

  • Lower blood pressure.


Capillaries


  • Tiny vessels connecting arteries and veins.

  • Walls are one cell thick for easy exchange of gases and nutrients.

Structure of the Human Heart


The heart’s four chambers work together to pump blood efficiently.


  • Right Atrium receives blood from the body.

  • Right Ventricle pumps blood to the lungs.

  • Left Atrium receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs.

  • Left Ventricle pumps blood to the body.

  • The septum divides the heart into right and left sides.

  • Valves between chambers prevent blood from flowing backward.



How the Heart Works


The heart pumps blood in a cycle:


  1. Blood enters the right atrium from the body.

  2. It moves to the right ventricle.

  3. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs for oxygen.

  4. Oxygen-rich blood returns to the left atrium.

  5. Blood moves to the left ventricle.

  6. The left ventricle pumps blood to the whole body.


This process repeats continuously to keep blood flowing.



Double Circulation


The human circulatory system has two loops:


  • Pulmonary circulation: Moves blood between the heart and lungs.

  • Systemic circulation: Moves blood between the heart and the rest of the body.

Heartbeat and Pulse


The heartbeat is the sound of the heart pumping blood. It is caused by the opening and closing of heart valves.


  • The average heart rate for children is about 70 to 100 beats per minute.

  • The pulse is the rhythmic throbbing of arteries caused by the heartbeat.

  • You can measure your pulse on your wrist or neck to check your heart rate.



Blood Pressure


Blood pressure measures the force of blood pushing against artery walls.


  • Systolic pressure is the pressure when the heart beats and pumps blood.

  • Diastolic pressure is the pressure when the heart rests between beats.


A normal blood pressure reading for children is around 90/60 mmHg to 120/80 mmHg.
